Where Humility Begins

"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." James 4:19

I wonder if there isn't a very fine line between pride and humility. How so? "Pride cometh before the fall!" Have you ever stopped to think about what this statement means? If fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, then folly starts with an unwillingness to see our own faults. The Bible speaks about the kings of old; Pharaoh and Pilate and Herod, who all sat on thrones because they were supposed to be wise. More often then not, they lacked humility. My friends, it’s not just kings who sit on thrones. Every one of us sits on a throne, a throne of pride, a throne of self-righteousness, a throne of greed, a throne of me, me, me! If we convince ourselves that we sit at the center of our universe, how will humility enter us? Men did not begin as fools, they became fools. The thing about being humble is that we have to step down off our throne to do it. That’s where humility begins. May we all have the wisdom to seek humility and the courage to receive it.
