Definition of Faith

Hebrews 11 is often called the "Faith Hall of Fame." In this notable passage, the writer of Hebrews introduces an impressive list of heroic characters from the Old Testament. These men and women and their stories stand out to encourage and challenge our faith.

Faith is defined as belief with strong conviction; firm belief in something for which there may be no tangible proof; complete trust, confidence, reliance or devotion. Faith is the opposite of doubt.

Webster's New World College Dictionary defines faith as "unquestioning belief that does not require proof or evidence; unquestioning belief in God, religious tenets."

How Does the Bible Define Faith?

Faith is possibly the single-most important element in the Christian life. Let's look at passages in the Bible that speak to faith:

Hebrews 11:6 "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him."

Faith, then, is the key to pleasing God. We need faith to come to God, to believe He exists and to trust Him for our salvation. When, our continued faith, the kind that causes us to seek Him daily, offers the promise of a dynamic, rewarding walk with God.

Faith and the Christian Life

The Bible gives this description of faith in Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

Scripture explains that the source of faith is God: Ephesians 2:8-9 "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no man can boast."

Mustard Seed Faith

When the disciples were unable to heal a demon, they asked Jesus, "Why couldn't we drive it?" He replied, "Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you had faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will be moved. Nothing is impossible with God." Matthew 17:19-20.

Faith Comes by Hearing How can you build up your faith? Faith comes by hearing the Word of God; "For Isaiah says, 'Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?' Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ." Romans 10:16-17

Full Assurance of Faith

"Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water." Hebrews10:19-22

Faith Pleases God

Faith pleases God more than anything else. The Christian life is dependent upon faith. We stand on faith; we live on faith. Faith is loved and honored by God more than any other single thing. The Bible teaches that faith is the only approach that we have to God. No man has sins forgiven, no man goes to heaven, no man has assurance of peace and happiness, until he has faith in Jesus Christ.

Prayer of Faith

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray, Dear Lord, see me through these hard times. In these troubling times, I am filled with unspeakable fears. I reach out my hand to you now, And ask you to walk besides me. I cannot carry all my burdens, But I know you can, and will. Please walk beside me. Please guide me. Please help me hold on strong, Through the trials and storms. Help me hold on to my faith, In even the darkest hour. Stay with me Lord, And show me Your way. In your love and Holy Spirit I abide. Amen.
